Setting the Foundation for Dublin Airport’s Development Strategy

Rapid growth accelerates capacity expansion needs

A primary gateway to Ireland and western Europe, Dublin Airport serves as a critical transportation link and key economic enabler for the island. From 2014 to 2018, the airport experienced a dramatic 45% increase in passenger volume, now serving nearly 31.5 million passengers annually. Growth is driven through partnership with a broad airline base anchored by Aer Lingus—a network carrier with a rapidly growing transatlantic hub—and Ryanair, a highly successful Irish low-cost carrier.

daa (formerly Dublin Airport Authority) initially engaged Ricondo to prepare an airfield masterplan in 2014, with a focus on maximizing current airfield capacity and establishing the timeline to develop the North Parallel Runway, now under construction.

In 2016, daa engaged Ricondo to prepare a masterplan for Dublin Airport, focusing on balanced airport development across all functional areas to accommodate future demand levels of 40 and 55 million passengers annually. The emerging masterplan, intended to guide development strategy and respond to evolving needs, serves as a foundation for the Airport’s Capital Investment Program (CIP). Ricondo continues to provide airport planning services in support of the CIP development.

Across all daa engagements, Ricondo has applied a unique blend of:

  • Deep airport planning expertise across all functional areas
  • Highly quantitative, fact-based decision support analyses
  • Expertise that focuses on the business of running an airport and the challenges of financing a large investment program
  • Strategic insight from broad experience at airports around the globe

With support from the Ricondo team, daa has created a roadmap to deliver sustainable, efficient capacity expansion focused on the needs of passengers and airlines—reinforcing the airport’s contribution to the economy and people of Ireland.
